Network obfuscation is a blanket term for security technologies that conceal or obscure network assets and make the transference of data difficult to discover through removal of attribution, evasive routing patterns and masked signatures and patterns. Intelligence and military units within the U.S. federal government have long used obfuscation techniques to support digital operational security, or the practice minimizing the observability of friendly activity by malicious third parties. These techniques are now increasingly being adopted by enterprise and the critical infrastructure sectors, using obfuscation to supplement traditional network security. Since adversaries cannot interfere with things they can’t target, obfuscation can protect network assets from discovery and attack, allow sensitive information to flow undetected and unhindered, and protect the digital signatures and privacy of end users.
